Mentee of the Month – August Meet Mariame Chaya Mariame Chaya Mariame Chaya is a 20-year-old Guinean-American scholar, aspiring attorney, and rising senior at NYU majoring in Global Political Studies with a minor in Anthropology. Born and raised in the South Bronx to West African immigrant parents, Mariame’s academic journey has been shaped by purpose, leadership, and service. From being named First Year of the Year to serving on the executive board for Women of Excellence, Strength, and Tenacity (WEST), Mariame has made it her mission to lead with impact. She co-founded Raising the Bar, a space within NYU’s Academic Achievement Program for Black and Brown pre-law students to feel seen, supported, and heard. Her resume includes everything from public health research with NYC Communities for Health to studying abroad at NYU Abu Dhabi — an experience that took her to 9 countries and expanded her global outlook. Mariame’s mentor speaks of her with deep admiration — noting her consistent engagement, strong initiative, and unwavering drive. She is the embodiment of a mentee who not only absorbs knowledge but gives it back tenfold through leadership and action. She brings a strong background in storytelling, strategy, and relationship-building to her work in development. Before transitioning into fundraising, Aissatou led communications at RISE and served as Digital Strategist for the Indiana Destination Development Corporation, where she helped rebrand “IN Indiana” and expanded the state’s digital presence. She is also the founder of Tales and Turbans, a lifestyle platform that celebrates motherhood and identity, with over 260,000 followers across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook. Her work has led to partnerships with brands like Dove, Pantene, and Pampers. Aissatou is the author of Daddies and Daughters Stick Together, a children’s book honoring the bond between Black fathers and daughters.
